ARCH 402A: Architectural Design IV Gallery: Extreme-ness, or Nine Points for an Architecture of Affordable Housing in Los Angeles

Patchwork Agglomeration

Bars of housing and green spaces are stitched together to form clusters of housing. Each cluster becomes a small community or village unto itself. This patchwork aims to provide supportive housing for the homeless and provide private spaces for those going through the process of recovery from addiction or mental illness while maintaining a sense of community. The outdoor program includes edible community gardens for each cluster, landscaped park spaces, and recreational amenities. The clusters follow the scale of the blocks in the city and form pedestrian superblocks that generate new landscaped pedestrian corridors. The project is sited on the southern border of the city of Florence, and is within walking distance of firestone station.
