Merging
The original inquiry explored the presence of barriers or lack thereof between a person and their environment. The ecological threshold examines the act of how private life spills over into public spaces and how public life spills over into private spaces, overall enhancing the sense of community. The proposed metro station seeks to emphasize this community by allowing the “private life” of surrounding cultural and dining experiences to spill over into the design of the public space as gravel and plant life on top and around the building become an abstract signage to direct pedestrians around Little Tokyo. Inversely, the project establishes a sense of monumentality that places the public life of the metro station into the private residential spaces through sheer presence in the vain of Central Park.
