Screening Light

A series of screens augment light through the transition from exterior to interior space. The striated exterior screen creates kinetic shadow patterns on the interior corridor in response to the sun’s position during the day, while flipping these patterns to the exterior at night once the internal structure acts as the light source. The translucent glass building envelope diffuses the patterns created by the striated screen, softening hard shadow edges to create an atmospheric interior of airy, diffused light. The roof skylights provide their own kinetic pattern that primarily exists internally, but reveals itself suddenly and surprisingly between the striated screen patterns at certain times of the day. The striated screen and glass elements create visible links from interior to exterior, while simultaneously contrasting light and shadow in a back and forth exchange of focusing attention internally and externally. The spaces of domesticity exists on three floors with varying degrees of light and shadow, transparency and opacity.
