Oscillating Relationship in Layered Spaces

Venturi states that architecture embodies ambiguity and tension due to the oscillating relationship produced by its form and substance.

This led me to the question: “How can oscillating relationships produce richness in architecture?” One way I thought this could be achieved is through the connection between inside and outside.

I wanted to apply the idea of an oscillating relationship within the design of my micro dwelling by creating alternating areas of indoor and outdoor space. In order to further incorporate this concept into the design, I chose to produce vertically layered interior spaces within a simple façade continuing the language of the USC Watt Chapel walls.

The vertically layered areas within the dwelling allow the dweller to observe the oscillating relationship between inside and outside spaces. Whether one looks from inside to outside or vice versa, the vertical layering offers a seamless transition from one space to the next. This oscillating relationship creates ambiguity in the sense of interiority and exteriority within.
