ARCH 402A: Architectural Design IV

Extreme-ness, or Nine Points for an Architecture of Affordable Housing in Los Angeles

Wicked problems require extreme thinking, solutions, and action. Social justice, climate change, houselessness, and more specifically, houselessness in Los Angeles are some notable examples. Yet, collective housing is not just a problem to be solved but rather one of the most enduring and fundamental expressions of architecture and cities. Using extreme sports as a metaphor for contemplating the idea of the extreme, the studio examined a range of issues and developed a list of nine principles or “points” that led to a series of experimental prototypes.
