Distributed Light

In his book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, Robert Venturi said, “…[Villa Savoye] is simple outside yet complex inside” (P. 23). In Le Corbusier’s infamous Villa Savoye, the horizontal window frames the views from the interior space and creates a cohesive relationship between interior and exterior. Distributed Light is an exploration of how light is diffused and its effect within the space. The primary goal of this exploration is to elongate the interior spaces of the micro-dwelling so that they appear to feel more open and spacious. This objective is accomplished by installing long, vertical windows that run across the east and west elevations of the building: the strategic placement of windows gives a complex shape on the interior. In order to enhance the connection between interior and exterior, a space was carved out in the center of the structure to situate a courtyard that opens up entirely to the interior program. The natural light brought in from above diffuses along the ground floor, illuminating the interior spaces, creating a true lighting atmospheric experience to the building user.
