Figure-Void-Field

This project adopts an informal spatial organizational strategy consisting of 11 one- and two-story courtyard-patio houses arranged in a checkerboard, to create an equal number of indoor/outdoor spaces for each unit. Typically, each unit contains an integral garden and courtyard and flanks the flexible core and shell volumes, and can be outfitted for various households including singles, small and large families, and co-living arrangements. The linear vaulted ceiling forms increases the sense of interior volume and creates a complementary relationship to the outdoor spaces, recalling Le Corbusier’s unbuilt Roq et Rob housing project or Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum.
