Fix Flex Flux

A synthesis of fixed, flexible, and fluid elements brought forth this proposal for a working space along the Los Angeles River. An adaptable structural system derived from traditional wooden post and beam construction techniques leverages the strength, span, and customizability of modern laminated timber technologies. Novel spatial configurations can perpetually be given form, adjusted, and disassembled.

Interior spaces open towards interlocking garden terraces, reducing reliance on conditioned air. To facilitate adaptability and improve climatic performance, a secondary operable façade of translucent polycarbonate panels is draped over the primary wooden interior. The panels swivel between closed and open throughout the course of the day, welcoming cooling breezes or filtering a harsh glare into an atmospheric glow. The industrial façade, given a pure cubic form, enables the ephemerality of the fluid interior space.
