Space Between The Frames

This project explored the elements of architecture in the context of a micro-dwelling for a visiting lecturer on the USC campus. Referencing Robert Venturi’s, “Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture”, the project started from the spatial concept of “Series of things in things or enclosures in enclosures”. Using and translating this spatial concept, the design explores the intersection of solid planes in the form of concrete frames, and repetitive lines in the form of wood framing and extended joists. The wood framing is multi-functional and it performs as a permeable inner enclosure, light modulator, structural element, and a contrasting material to the concrete frames. Having a wood screen as an enclosure allows the spaces to be semi-open to the exterior. The resulting living spaces are filled with rhythmic, patterned light. The internal division of space is organized around the stairs where the articulated definition of space becomes integral to the furnishing and programmatic uses within internal spatial divisions.
