Leimert Park Community Center

A reiterating diagonal parking spot datum — initially used as a means of acknowledging the local car-dwelling population — creates a grid which guides the program of this community center. Apertures permeate a sculptural, monolithic concrete façade, leading to a raised park, indoor/outdoor all-purpose courts, and amphitheater. A second mass is differentiated from the primary program and designated as much needed grocery; on the enclosed second level, daycare, education, and children’s spaces, take the form of large wooden blocks surreptitiously shifted off-grid.
