ARCH 500A: Comprehensive Architectural Design

Leimert Park Film Institute

People, art, and culture have been major characteristics that defined the neighborhood of Leimert Park. Engagement of the community and activism makes this area of Los Angeles significant. The project activates engagement from the community by using a solid-void relationship in the buildings form. The voids act as an opportunity to connect occupants inside to the community outside, and introduces green spaces within the building.

Major voids on the Crenshaw and metro plaza facades of the building serve as an urban connector and public passage way through the building. As people move vertically through the building, interior voids create courtyards filled with murals and open spaces. Additionally, the voids also allow for visual connection between buildings binding the concept of art, culture, and education as programs can look into each other, or out into the neighborhood.
