The Shell

This project takes into account of the context of Leimert Park Plaza. The site has a rich history of black Americans in Los Angeles and the inhabitants of Leimert Park chose to showcase their history and culture with numerous art studios, book stores, restaurants and gathering spaces. This project proposes to accentuate the pre-existing buildings and extend their spaces to the new proposed building. The building is a concrete shell structure that is pinched and pulled up and down to create open programmed spaces which allow the existing buildings on site to blend into the new proposed project. The Concrete Shelled community center features large open green spaces to emphasize and support Leimert Park Plaza’s necessity and agenda for green spaces.
