Confluent Fields
Confluent fields is located in Atwater village, a site which is adjacent to the LA River and vast amounts of commercial buildings. There were two primary challenges I was working with: the LA River and the railway. Due to the disconnect of the site from residential surroundings, my intent was to create a relationship from and to the residential zones. Therefore, I extended the grid system from the nearby residential streets and the grids that intersect in my site transformed into living bars. The northern singular long bar was formed from a grid parallel to the railway tracks to serve as a barrier for the living bars. In order create a stronger relationship to the LA River the bars were later opened and slightly rotated to create a more “welcoming/embracing” feel. As a result of these combined systems, different garden spaces were created, each with a unique identity, that allowed for more interesting user experiences and a connection to the adjacent biking path.
