Duplexity

This metro station is a negotiation of a complex geometry and the surrounding context of Little Tokyo and the Arts District. There is a play between the solid exterior skin and the perforated interior skin. The exterior invites approaching pedestrians in while the interior creates a compelling experience for people circulating to the metro tracks. The exterior and interior relationship creates a duality in which conditions can both be contrasted and compared. The threshold is defined by the transition of the insider or outsider’s experience. While the duality of the insider and outsider experience can lead to segregation, the goal was to explore a complexity that can only be attained through synergy.
