Intertweave

Interweave is directed towards younger residents that are moving into Leimert park, or having to move out from their family. I wanted to create an environment that fosters micro-communities for these new residents, while also creating a flexible space on the first floor to house various programs depending on needs and desires of the growing community. The entire structure is based on frames that exist on a matrix system, interweaving dwelling units with one large flowing space that acts as both circulation and open, gathering spaces to create a more homogenous volume. Individual housing units are designed to act as 3D tetris-like puzzle pieces that lock and blend together to further this design goal. The ground floor is an open space created with the same frame system with a descending ground plane that follows the grid created by the frames. The layers create varying spatial qualities through the available surface area between stairs, as well as the ground-to-ceiling height, allowing for different programs and gathering spaces depending on the size of event, as well as spatial desires. Three programs that I thought were of importance were: a flexible art gallery, a presentation / performance area, and a pop-up shop. These programs address and promote the existing culture of Leimert Park, exposing and integrating new residents first-hand, while also addressing the need for public amenities.
