Jazz on the Lawn
Inspired by the historical presence and cultural significance of jazz in Leimert Park, Jazz on the Lawn aims to attract musicians back to the neighborhood by providing them with a performance venue located at the heart of a housing complex. These 2-3 people apartments shelter musicians and give them a box seat to every show performed by their friends, roommates, and neighbors. Underneath the lawn are 6 practice rooms, available for musicians to rehearse without disturbing neighbors. Above the housing units lies a lush layer of grass, where residents and visitors can sunbathe while enjoying some Friday afternoon jazz or look at the stars with Saturday night blues playing in the background. Benches provide seating underneath the shade of the trees and planter boxes give residents the option to participate in a community garden. Acoustic panels lie over the amphitheater, absorbing excess sound and providing shade to the musicians performing below.
