Jazz Pavilion

With an emphasis on centrality and the use of apertures in directing the level of interaction between audience and performance, this project facilitates spectators’ focus on the jazz band and their music whilst avoiding a stark separation between them and their listeners. By keeping the band on a lower platform, they are neither exalted nor isolated from their viewers, fostering a stronger communal feel between both parties. The main audience spaces sit at different levels with the band placed at the intersection of their perspectives, allowing them to view not only the band, but also their fellow listeners. Audience members who prefer more private areas in order to converse amongst themselves or listen to the music in solitude along the periphery of the site are also enabled to enjoy the jazz music, as the apertures of the pavilion allow the sound to reach them as well.
