Leimert Park Comunity Center

Based on the site that is situated in the South LA neighborhood of Leimert Park, my project aims to serve the neighborhood with a community center that stays true to the rich and proud tradition of the cultural club for African Americans in LA.

Using an open floor plan concept, the building becomes one with the site in a way that allows people to flow and interact in different areas within the program. With that, rooms are arranged throughout two floors that each contain categorized zones of use to group similar programs together and minimize space.

The first floor program is centralized with 4 basketball courts laying on each of the four corners of the site. This allows users who are embedded in the center space to be able to interact with the outside, making the basketball courts multiuse. Within the center, there is a cafe and a multipurpose room with added necessary programs to accommodate its functions. As one moves up to the second floor, maintaining elements of the structure within the stairs and second floor plate, the program consists of two more zones, one being the gym area and the other kids room/classrooms.
