Open Studios

The structure emphasizes the process of art-making through the integration of open studio spaces. Exposed wood framing blurs the thresholds between the interior and exterior to promote transparency in activity from artists occupying the structure and those on the exterior. As visitors circulate through each floor, the occupants experience a different step in the process of craft-making on each floor. As they reach the top floor, they are able to utilize open studio spaces to develop their art. Different scaled “cubbies” are utilized for either storage for objects, or at a larger scale for human occupation. Artists also play a role in the exterior finish in that it is a developing material, composed of scraps and pieces of pottery or canvas or tiles that the artists would contribute. The finish material purposes the surfaces of the structure to become part of the process of crafting and artistry itself.
