Performative Living

Performative Living is a co-housing project that explores the relationship between the commercial program of a performance space and a residential complex. Throughout Leimert Park, public and private programs come to a meeting point; therefore the project is oriented based on its surrounding streets, with the performance space fully visible and accessible through West 43rd street and the housing program accessed through the more private residential street, McClung Drive. The project explores that duality and its meeting points through the contrast of public and private, not only in their positioning on the site, but also through the opacity or translucency of materials, geometric forms and the movement through those spaces. The project also considers the mixed population of the site through various housing unit aggregations, from family units of four to five occupants, to individual units. In addition to that, the project explores sustainability through featuring solar energy, water collection, natural light and ventilation as well as through its central courtyard. The courtyard in this project is informed by Leimert’s encouragement of community, through various open gathering spaces, central circulation and a large shared residential space, the project promotes co-housing as a form of creating a close community between the residents.
