The Cooperative Collective

This housing cooperative seeks to engage and invite residents to transform the space as needed and encourage gathering. The overall organization of this co-op includes a fully community-oriented ground floor, with three residential floors above. Upon entering the site from its multiple entrances, residents and community members can engage in retail shopping, reserved only for small, community business owners, an interior gathering green space for play or relaxation, a food co-op, where residents and community members are encouraged to take fresh produce, a child day-care oriented toward single-parent households, conference rooms reserved for workshops, and bike storage. All of which also provide job opportunities for community members. With the residences lining the inner atrium, circulation is pushed to the building’s extremities. As the concrete platforms twist and shift, a push and pull dynamic is created that limit access on each floor. Where some areas are tighter than others indicate how accessible, and therefore public, or how inaccessible, or private, it is.
