The Playspace

This project utilizes 360-degree surroundings by creating a landscape in (and on) which people are able to live multiple experiences, whether that be through the transition from neighboring sites or the movement across the site itself.

The formal qualities of the landscape’s “green roof” finds inspiration in both the existing and fabricated context of Burbank; old roads collaborate with new ones, and a bike path introduces a sense of nature through organic flow. Internally, modular programs reflect the purpose, typology, and space of neighboring projects.

What originated as gaping subtractions and towering platforms become interpretations of play, where community activities can be fostered according to light, elevation, and space. Democracy, movement, accessibility, exposure, and separation are all values that are present in the experience of the project.
